There is truly nothing better than pulling apart a warm piece of naan to find a center of gooey, melted cheese. This recipe brings that restaurant style experience right into your own kitchen with a simple dough that rises quickly and cooks perfectly on the stovetop.

My biggest tip for success is to roll the dough out gently so the cheese stays tucked inside without poking through the surface. It is the perfect side dish for any curry or saucy meal you are planning to serve tonight.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • Fresh chopped cilantro for garnish

8Instructions

  1. 1

Whisk the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large bowl.

  2. 2

Add the warm water, yogurt, and oil, then stir until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.

  4. 4

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for one hour.

  5. 5

Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and roll each into a small circle.

  6. 6

Place a generous spoonful of mozzarella in the center of each circle, pull the edges together to seal, and gently roll it flat again.

  7. 7

Heat a heavy skillet over medium high heat and cook each naan for about 2 minutes per side until golden brown and bubbly.

  8. 8

Mix the melted butter with the minced garlic and brush it over the warm naan before sprinkling with cilantro.

Tips

Serve these warm right out of the pan so the cheese stays nice and stretchy. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight bag and reheat them in a dry skillet for a minute or two to restore that fresh texture.
