Making candied pecans at home is much easier than people think. These are inspired by the ones I used to get at the local Amish market, coated in a sparkly sugar crust that has just the right amount of spice. They fill the whole house with a wonderful aroma while they bake.

The secret is using a bit of allspice along with the cinnamon to give them that special depth. Make sure to whisk your egg white until it is really frothy so the sugar sticks perfectly to every single nut. It creates that classic crispy shell we all love.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pecan halves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

8Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper so nothing sticks.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and salt together until everything is well combined.

  3. 3

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg white with the water and vanilla until it is very frothy and bubbly.

  4. 4

Add the pecans to the egg white mixture and toss them well until every pecan is completely coated.

  5. 5

Pour the cinnamon sugar mixture over the pecans and toss again until they are all evenly covered in sugar.

  6. 6

Spread the pecans out in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet.

  7. 7

Bake for about 45 minutes, stirring the pecans every 15 minutes so they dry out evenly.

  8. 8

Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely on the tray before serving or storing.

Tips

Store these in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. They are wonderful on top of a fresh salad or packaged in small jars as a thoughtful homemade gift for friends.
