There is something so comforting about a warm apple dessert when the weather turns crisp. This recipe is my favorite because it skips the oats for a refined, sandy topping that lets the flavor of the fruit shine through perfectly.

It is truly simple to put together, which makes it a great choice for last minute company. If you have extra time, try serving it with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream while it is still warm from the oven.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

6Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a baking dish.

  2. 2

Toss the apple slices with the first half cup of sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a large bowl, then spread them evenly into the prepared baking dish.

  3. 3

In a separate bowl, mix the flour and remaining sugar together.

  4. 4

Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to combine until it looks like coarse crumbs.

  5. 5

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples.

  6. 6

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling.

Tips

Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days. You can easily reheat individual portions in the microwave or oven. For a nice texture, keep the butter cold until the very moment you start mixing the topping.
