One Skillet Apple Cider Chicken
This cozy, flavorful chicken dish brings the best of fall to your dinner table with a creamy herb sauce and tender apples.
easy.enzo81.xyzThere is something so comforting about cooking with apples and warm spices once the weather starts to cool down. This recipe is a favorite in my home because it feels like a fancy restaurant meal but comes together easily in just one pan.
I love how the tartness of the cider balances the savory notes of sage and mustard. For the best result, pick a firm apple like a Honeycrisp or Gala, and do not worry about peeling them as the skins add a lovely pop of color to the final dish.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 firm apples, cored and sliced into thick wedges
- 4 chicken breasts
- 1/4 cup dry white wine
- 1 cup apple cider
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 teaspoon fresh sage, chopped
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt and black pepper to taste
7Instructions
- 1
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- 2
Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes until soft. Stir in the garlic and apple slices, cooking for another 4 minutes. Remove these from the pan and set aside.
- 3
Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and sear for 3 to 4 minutes per side until fully cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the chicken from the pan.
- 4
Pour the white wine into the skillet to deglaze, scraping up the browned bits. Let it simmer for 2 minutes.
- 5
Whisk in the apple cider, chicken broth, pumpkin pie spice, sage, mustard, and heavy cream. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- 6
Return the chicken, onions, garlic, and apples to the skillet. Simmer for 3 minutes until everything is hot and well coated in the sauce.
- 7
Taste and add extra salt or mustard if you prefer a sharper flavor, then serve warm.
Tips
Serve this dish with a side of creamy mashed potatoes or crusty bread to enjoy all that extra sauce. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat gently on the stovetop.
