Homemade Sourdough Bagels
These bagels offer the perfect balance of a chewy crust and a soft interior.
easy.enzo81.xyzThere is nothing quite like the smell of fresh bagels baking in your own kitchen. I love this recipe because it uses your sourdough starter to get that wonderful flavor and texture without needing any commercial yeast.
Since this recipe works with both same day or overnight schedules, you can easily fit it into your week. My biggest tip is to make sure your starter is nice and bubbly before you begin for the best rise.
Ingredients
- 1 cup active sourdough starter
- 1 cup warm water
- 4 cups bread flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon barley malt syrup or honey for the boiling water
9Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, water, flour, sugar, and salt until a shaggy dough forms.
- 2
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- 3
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise until it has doubled in size.
- 4
Punch the dough down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- 5
Shape each piece into a ball and poke a hole through the center to create the bagel shape.
- 6
Cover the shaped bagels and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
- 7
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and stir in the syrup or honey.
- 8
Boil each bagel for about 1 minute on each side, then transfer them to a lined baking sheet.
- 9
Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes until the tops are golden brown.
Tips
These bagels taste best fresh, but you can freeze them for up to a month. Slice them before freezing so you can pop them directly into the toaster whenever you want a quick breakfast.
