This rustic apple galette is a favorite in my kitchen when I want something sweet but do not feel like rolling out a traditional pie crust. It has that wonderful flaky pastry and sweet cinnamon apples we all love, but the free form shape makes it so much more forgiving to put together.

You do not even have to peel the apples for this one, which saves a lot of time. Just slice them thin, toss them with sugar and cinnamon, and fold the crust over the edges for a lovely homemade treat that looks beautiful on any table.

Ingredients

  • 1 store bought or homemade pie crust
  • 3 medium baking apples, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar for sprinkling

9Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with the granulated sugar and cinnamon until they are evenly coated.

  3. 3

Roll out your pie crust on the prepared parchment paper into a large circle.

  4. 4

Arrange the apple slices in the center of the crust, leaving about two inches of space around the edges.

  5. 5

Gently fold the edges of the dough up and over the apples, pleating the dough as you go to hold everything in place.

  6. 6

Dot the top of the apples with the small pieces of butter.

  7. 7

Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle the entire galette with the turbinado sugar.

  8. 8

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  9. 9

Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Tips

Serve this warm with a big scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. If you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for two days or in the fridge to keep them fresh longer. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes to get that crust crispy again.
