Sometimes a plain brownie just does not hit the spot when you really want chocolate. These brownies are topped with a thick layer of frosting that tastes just like actual fudge, making them a real treat for any occasion.

The best part is that the frosting is super simple to make. You do not even need a candy thermometer to get that perfect, fudgy texture that sets up beautifully on top of the bars.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

7Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and grease an 8 inch square baking pan.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.

  3. 3

Stir in the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder until just combined, making sure not to overmix the batter.

  4. 4

Spread the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs.

  5. 5

While the brownies cool, prepare the frosting by whisking together the melted butter and cocoa powder in a medium bowl.

  6. 6

Add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to the cocoa mixture and beat until the frosting is smooth and thick.

  7. 7

Spread the frosting over the warm brownies and let them cool completely so the fudge layer can set before you slice them.

Tips

Make sure your brownies are still slightly warm when you add the frosting so it spreads easily. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. You can add a pinch of sea salt on top for a nice contrast to the sweet chocolate.
