This dish is one of my favorite ways to make ground beef feel special without spending hours in the kitchen. The za'atar seasoning adds a beautiful brightness and depth that makes the meat taste absolutely incredible, especially when paired with fresh greens.

I love serving this whenever I need a healthy meal in a hurry. If you want to make it even heartier, you can toss in a handful of chickpeas or serve it over a warm bowl of fluffy rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons za'atar spice blend
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 5 ounces fresh baby spinach
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Lemon wedges for serving
  • Optional: toasted pine nuts for garnish

7Instructions

  1. 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

  2. 2

Add the onion to the skillet and cook until it becomes soft and translucent, which should take about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Add the ground beef to the pan, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it browns.

  4. 4

Stir in the garlic, za'atar, and cumin, cooking for another minute until everything is fragrant.

  5. 5

Add the spinach to the skillet in handfuls, stirring until it wilts down completely.

  6. 6

Taste your beef and greens, then season with salt and pepper as needed.

  7. 7

Serve immediately with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a sprinkle of pine nuts if you like.

Tips

This dish stores well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. It tastes great served inside warm pita bread or tucked into a lettuce wrap for a lighter lunch option.
