American chop suey is one of those meals that feels like a big hug in a bowl. It is a simple pasta dish made with ground meat, a savory tomato sauce, and plenty of tender macaroni noodles, making it a reliable favorite for busy weeknights when you need something filling.

Since this recipe makes a large batch, it is fantastic for meal planning. You can enjoy it for dinner tonight and tuck the rest away for a quick lunch later in the week because the flavors only get better after sitting in the fridge for a day or two.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Grated parmesan cheese for serving

8Instructions

  1. 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the macaroni according to the package directions until al dente.

  2. 2

While the pasta cooks, brown the ground beef in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat until it is no longer pink.

  3. 3

Add the onion to the skillet with the beef and cook for about 5 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent.

  4. 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  5. 5

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, and Italian seasoning, then stir well to combine.

  6. 6

Lower the heat and let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  7. 7

Drain the cooked pasta and fold it directly into the sauce until every noodle is well coated.

  8. 8

Season with salt and pepper to your liking and serve warm with a generous sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. If the sauce thickens too much while sitting, just add a tiny splash of water or broth when reheating it on the stove.
