This dish is a staple in my kitchen when I need something quick on a busy weeknight. Everyone loves how the tender beef pairs with the crunch of fresh broccoli, all tied together with a simple sauce that has just the right amount of sweetness and salt.

I find that slicing the beef thinly against the grain makes a huge difference in how tender the final result is. If you want a bit of extra heat, feel free to add a pinch of red pepper flakes when you toss everything in the pan.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound flank steak, sliced thinly against the grain
  • 4 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice for serving

7Instructions

  1. 1

Whisk together the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger in a small bowl to create your sauce.

  2. 2

Heat one tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or wok over medium high heat.

  3. 3

Add the beef strips to the skillet and cook until they are browned and cooked through, then remove them from the pan and set aside.

  4. 4

Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the same pan and toss in the broccoli florets with a splash of water, covering for 2 minutes to steam them until bright green.

  5. 5

Add the cooked beef back into the pan and pour the sauce over everything.

  6. 6

Stir constantly for 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli perfectly.

  7. 7

Serve warm over a bowl of fluffy brown rice.

Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. When reheating, add a tiny splash of water to keep the sauce from becoming too sticky.
